Medical Director:
Kathleen Toups, M.D. is the Medical Director of the Bay Area Research Institute, where she conducts clinical trials on a full-time basis.  She has a wide variety of experiences including a past faculty appointment at the University of California, Davis serving as the Director of the Inpatient Psychiatry Program for the VA Hospital at Travis Air Force Base.  She also has prior experience as a primary care physician, as a staff psychiatrist at Kaiser-Permanente and Director of their Intensive Outpatient Psychiatry Program, and in private practices in San Diego and Antioch, California.

After receiving her medical degree from LSU in New Orleans, Dr. Toups did her psychiatric residency training at the University of California, San Diego.  During her residency, The American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry chose her as a Mead-Johnson Fellow.  Dr. Toups is board certified in both adult and geriatric psychiatry, and has practiced psychiatry since 1992. She is also credentialed as a Certified Clinical Trials Investigator (CCTI) by the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. Dr. Toups was inducted as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2007.

Dr. Toups has been a clinical investigator for many classes of new medications and conducted clinical trials in inpatient, outpatient, and nursing home facilities.  She has been the principal investigator in many pivotal studies focusing on new treatments for all types of psychiatric disorders (like ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia), along with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimers Dementia, Insomnia, Pain, and Fibromyalgia.
